A Spring of Hope has teamed up with South African menstrual hygiene cup company, Mina, to help combat period poverty in rural South Africa! Mina cups provide a solution for young girls in these rural areas who struggle to afford menstrual hygiene products every month, may attend a school with poor sanitation facilities, and those that may not have regular access to water to wash reusable pads.
A Spring of Hope has teamed up with South African menstrual hygiene cup company, Mina, to help combat period poverty in rural South Africa! The cups are made from medical grade hypoallergenic silicone and come in two different sizes. Mina cups provide a solution for young girls in these rural areas who struggle to afford menstrual hygiene products every month, may attend a school with poor sanitation facilities, and those that may not have regular access to water to wash reusable pads. Mina cups are easy to use and clean and can be worn for up to 10 hours. This allows girls to go to school without worrying about leaks or having to empty the cups during the school day. Girls just need to empty the cups out after 8 to 10 hours and wipe them out. They then clean them before and after each period using boiling water, requiring very little water to keep the cups clean.
The Mina Foundation travels globally not only distributing cups to schools, but also empowering girls with information and mentorship about female hygiene and sanitation. We have partnered with Mina to not only distribute these cups to our partner schools but to also train young women from our communities to become Mina Mentors! These mentors lead workshops at our partner schools, teaching the girls about the cups, answering any and all questions, and providing additional support through whatsapp.
Each year, we host workshops at our partner schools, teaching girls about the menstrual cups and then distributing them out. By providing girls with menstrual hygiene supplies and having open discussions about puberty, female health, and menstrual hygiene management we look to get rid of the stigma surrounding menstruation, encourage girls to ask questions about their bodies, and help girls feel confident and empowered during their periods.
