Embracing All Cultures and Cuisine During Heritage Month

As we celebrate Heritage Month this year, embracing all cultures and cuisine,  learners at our partner schools are doing their part and keeping it healthy. They are already harvesting their fresh, organic vegetables thanks to the generous sponsorship from The Ackerman  Pick ‘n Pay Foundation.  Through this partnership, we have erected shade netting, conducted permaculture gardens workshops, provided seedlings and supported 20 of our partner schools to plant various vegetables, to supplement the school nutrition program.

Over 8 000 students are benefiting from this initiative daily. We were excited to learn that some of the educators and learners are taking this experience home and setting up their own home gardens!

We are ending the school term on a high note, with the layers from our chicken coop at Masweng Primary producing their first eggs. To celebrate Spring, learners also planted trees making sure that the free range chickens have enough shade.

Women in Entrepreneurship Program Launch

Our much-awaited Women In Entrepreneurship program launched on a high note as part of the Women’s Month celebrations in August. The program started off with a three-day bootcamp achieving 100% attendance. The 31 highly engaged young women who are running micro-enterprises, some still in ideation phase, were exposed to the fundamental concepts of setting up and running a sustainable business.

This intervention included exploring new business opportunities and value chains. The enthusiastic cohort of participants is currently attending mentoring and coaching sessions until November where they will be pitching their businesses and receiving their certificates. This much needed intervention would not have been possible without our amazing sponsor Itirele Trust as well as our partners in development African Olive Trading, Nourish and the Centre for Women Independence.

Financial literacy workshops in partnership with the Banking Association

South Africa has the lowest saving rate in the world, which means most of us do not have the financial buffer during hard times. During National Savings Month, in July we partnered with The Banking Association of South Africa as well as their member banks, Nedbank and Capitec at Sekoko

Primary in Limpopo and Ubuntu Mundo in Mpumalanga to deliver financial education workshops for educators and grade 7 learners. Planting the seed at an early age and nurturing wise money habits. Students also received money boxes and financial literacy games encouraging them to extend the lessons beyond the classroom. We are grateful for the partnerships that enable us to continue providing holistic community development.
