13 Aug 2014 Visiting Welverdiend
At the start of the week, we visited more of our partner schools in Welverdiend.
Mtembeni Primary
Our first stop was to visit with the learners at Mtembeni Primary, where we drilled their borehole in 2012. We are truly delighted to see the progress at this school. The landscaping coming into the school and the flourishing vegetable gardens are impressive. The children were happy to let us take a few photos and enjoyed seeing themselves on the camera. Thank you Principal Mnisi for showing us your A+ school!
Pfunakani Creche
We then stopped to say hello to the happy learners at Pfunakani Creche, just down the road from Mtembeni. A Spring of Hope assisted with drilling their borehole in 2012 as well. The founder of the creche, Clifford, was at the primary school and we chatted for a bit. Clifford tells us the borehole is working great and the ladies are in the midst of planting the spring vegetables. The children at the creche were happy to see us and we played a few games of Simon Says. It was tempting to spend the whole day with all those smiling faces!
Beretta Primary
We, of course, could not be so close to the Beretta school without stopping by to say hello. Beretta Primary was the inspiration for the founding of A Spring of Hope, as it was this school that Joanne and Brittany Young visiting in 2005 on their first trip to South Africa, and the first school at which A Spring of Hope raised funds to drill for water. We did not get to visit with the learners, unfortunately, as they had already gone home for the day, but Lynette, the school principal, and Moses showed Kelvin (our future permaculture expert) and Joanne the abundant gardens and orderly school grounds. It is always a pleasure to visit our flagship school! It was great to see the new seedlings growing from the seeds we brought from the US. We look forward to seeing those heirloom tomatoes! Thank you Lynette and Moses for the wonderful visit and of course the yummy veggies!
